    The Westcott Flex Panel

Whether you’re a photographer or a videographer, trying to find the most versatile light for your craft can often be a real challenge. On certain shoots, large lights may offer more power but come with the downside of being very difficult to adapt to confined quarters. Then their smaller brethren offer the opposite, giving more portability and ease of use while often lacking in the power department. That is what made the Westcott Flex Panel such an interesting prospect—power similar to larger lights with the versatility of smaller LED panels.

Westcott has made their line-up of Flex Panel products quite diverse in a short period of time, offering several different size and colour-temperature variations. For my test I used the 10 x 10” Flex Daylight kit, which is one of the company’s mid-range lights. It offers an output of 2100 lux at 1 metre and reproduces a daylight colour temperature of 5600K rated 95 (out of a possible 100) on the colour rendering index. The flex is also dimmable down to 5% of its full power. All of this is packed into a body that is under 7-mm thick, weighs less than 200 g and is water-resistant. Needless to say, this is one powerful light.

  • Fitbit forecasts dismal holiday quarter, shares sink

    1478173879_Fitbit-forecasts-dismal-holiday-quarter-shares-sink

Fitbit, which launched two new fitness wristbands, Charge 2 and Flex 2, in late August, said it sold 5.3 million devices in the quarter.
Wearable fitness device maker Fitbit Inc’s revenue forecast for the key-holiday shopping quarter fell well below of analysts’ estimates, hurt by soft demand and production issues related to its new Flex 2 wristband. Shares of the company, which also reported lower-than-expected quarterly revenue, plummeted more than 30 per cent in extended trading on Wednesday and were set to hit record-low levels on Thursday. Fitbit forecast revenue of $725 million to $750 million for the October-December quarter. That was well below analysts’ average estimate of $985.1 million.

The forecast implies revenue growth of 5.4 per cent at the top end. Analysts were expecting growth to pick up to 38.4 per cent…

  • Delhi air pollution: Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier 2 to Philips 3000 series, the air purifiers to consider

    1478173889_Delhi-air-pollution-Xiaomi-Mi-Air-Purifier-2-to-Philips-3000-series-the-air-purifiers-to-consider

Delhi air pollution continues: Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier 2 and more, the top options to consider. ( Image Source: PTI)
Delhi’s air remains polluted nearly 4 days after Diwali with PM2.5 levels crossing 900 per cubic metre, while PM 10 levels were also in the near 900 mark in various parts of the city. In most cities such pollution levels would be enough to call for a complete shut down, but of course in Delhi life goes on. The only solution appears to be investing in an air purifier, which of course is temporary relief.
In our own case, we’ve seen two air eurifiers (a Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier 2 and a Phillips AC4025 40 Watt Air Purifier) struggling to cope with Delhi’s smog inside a bedroom. At best, the PM2.5 level falls to 250 after the peak of 600. For now it doesn’t look like the smog is going away anytime soon, and getting an Air Purifier, at leas…

Delhi air pollution: The city has been reeling under severe smog since Diwali. (Image source: PTI)
You know you’re living in Delhi if your eyes burn, your throat is sore and your chest feels heavy. It’s been four days since Diwali night, however the cover of toxic air doesn’t seem to be lifting. The blame lies partly with the excessive fireworks display on Diwali night and partly with the farmers in Punjab who refuse to pay any heed to the environment and continue burning the crop stubble left behind after harvest.

There’s also the failed attempt by the Delhi government in vacuuming the dust off our streets which continues to be a major source of fine particulate matter available freely in the air. Combine expert medical advice that urges people to leave the National Capital (if they want to be healthy) along with more experts who say…

Apple’s MacBook Pro might have received its fair share of criticism for killing off ports, but according to Phil Schiller, the company’s Senior Vice-President of Marketing, online orders for the new notebooks are highest ever. According to Schiller’s comments, the 2016 MacBook Pro has more online orders than any other Pro laptop launched by Apple. Schiller made the comments in an exclusive interview to British newspaper The Independent.

Schiller in his interview also addressed the criticism directed at the new MacBook Pros. One of the most common complaints is about Apple doing away with all the regular ports, and instead placing type-C USB ports, which means people will have to rely on a range of adapters even if they want to…

  • Celestial taxi from Uber

    1478175626_Nebesnoe-taksi-ot-Uber

The American company Uber said that the air taxi is not fiction, but a reality. Soon we will not get on the subway, and across the sky. It is said the leading provider in this service sector.

We are talking about small electric planes, able to land and takeoff vertically. At first — with the pilots, over time — without them, that also savings. And no traffic, plus the ability to travel long distances. Interestingly, at present, Uber operates in Brazil in the air. Yet not only uses planes and helicopters.

At the beginning of 2017, the company proposes to convene the summit and to talk about the future of the industry. Looks like Uber really has a plan for the next ten years. Let’s wait and see….

  • Atomos Shogun 4K Recorder

When it comes to video, DSLRs and compact-system cameras have recently come into their own, offering decent video right out of the box. The issue comes from the fact that most cameras are limited by their built-in hardware and software, which limit recording speeds, and rely on codecs such as AVCHD to provide video in a nicely compressed form. With 4K video quickly aiming to become the standard video size, this problem has only increased. Atomos has solved this problem with their line of external recorders, the latest being the 4K Shogun recorder.

What the Shogun essentially does is attach to the camera through an HDMI or SDI port and access image data directly from the camera’s sensor. The Shogun then records this data in a high-quality 10-bit Pro-Res file to a external SATA hard drive, allowing you to take better advantage of colour depth and dynamic range. Some cameras such as the Sony A7S will only record 4K if an external system is attached. It should be noted that files sizes of uncompressed video are not for the faint of heart, with a 1TB hard drive only recording about 2.5 hours of video. Though, with the cost of a 2-TB hard drive sitting around $120, it will not be too much of a strain o…
