    Google get government support for its Project Loon to beam internet from floating balloons
    Internet giant Google is working with the government on a pilot project for providing Internet connectivity by using large balloons.
    Google, under its ‘Project Loon’, is using big balloons floating at a height of 20 kilometers above earth surface for transmission of Internet services. It has already tested this technology in New Zealand, California (the US) and Brazil.
    “Google approached government to set up the Loon project and Drone-based Internet transmission. Government has approved testing of Loon project only as of now. A committee under chairmanship of Secretary, DEITY, has been formed to work on it,” an official source told PTI.

    Virtual reality (VR) is seen as the next big thing in technology but not many devices are available for sale in India. Oculus, the VR company Facebook Inc bought in 2014, started accepting pre-orders this month for its much-awaited headset, Rift, which is priced at $599.

    Google says it has shipped 5 million Cardboard Virtual Reality devices.
    Alphabet Inc’s Google said it had shipped 5 million units of the Google Cardboard viewer, a wearable device that allows users to experience virtual reality through mobile apps.
    The company, which launched the Cardboard viewer a year and a half earlier, said on Wednesday that there had been 25 million downloads of Cardboard apps from its Google Play app store.
    Google has been exploring virtual reality for a while but the company dived into the concept this month by setting up a new division for virtual reality computing.
    Oculus, the virtual reality company Facebook Inc bought in 2014, started accepting pre-orders this month for its much-awaited headset, Rift, which will ship in first quarter.

    Four years after unveiling its wearable glass headset, Alphabet Inc’s Google shut down several social media accounts linked to the Glass gadget, ending its push to popularise the pricey eyeglasses with consumers.
    On Tuesday, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts for Google Glass were no longer active, a development first reported on the website 9to5Google.
    A statement on the Google Plus page said: “Hi Explorers, we’ve had a blast hanging out with you on G+ throughout the Explorer Program.” It went on to instruct users to get in touch with questions on the support page for Glass.
    The company declined to comment on the decision.
