• Computex 2016: Acer Liquid Zest Plus and TravelMate P2 notebooks launched; company sets an IoT vision

    Acer’s Liquid Zest Plus smartphone is priced at 9 and comes with a 5.5-inch full HD display, Android 6.0, and a Mediatek processor.
    Acer has launched a new Liquid Zest Plus smartphone, along with TravelMate P2 notebook series and a cloud-based vision for IoT devices called BeingWare, at the annual Computex conference 2016.
    Acer’s Liquid Zest Plus smartphone is priced at $199 and comes with a 5.5-inch full HD display, Android 6.0, and a Mediatek processor. The USP of the phone is the 5000 mAh battery, which Acer says will last for three days and can also double up as a power bank.
    It has a 13MP rear camera with PDAF, and also supports DTS-HD premium sound.
    The smartphone will be available in Europe, Middle East and America markets by July.

    Engineers from University of Michigan have developed a Batman-inspired software that can allow users to command their smartphones with sense force or pressure on its screen or body.
    “ForcePhone offers” a new way — like squeezing your smartphone to make a call — to bring pressure-sensitive display technology, similar to the 3D Touch functionality that debuted on the iPhone 6S to any smartphone.

    Samsung displayed a high resolution 4K screen for VR at the Display Week conference in San Francisco, CA. The Korean smartphone maker also showcased a number of other next-generation displays, but it was VR display that grabbed most attention.

    Datawind remains on top in the tablet market in India, according to IDC numbers.
    India’s tablet market for Q1 2016 remains flat with a total of 0.86 million units (including slate and detachable form factors) getting shipped, even as the detachables saw triple digit yearly growth, according to the latest numbers from research firm International Data Corporation (IDC).
    IDC says shipments grew by a marginal 1.3 per cent over the same period last year thanks to declining consumer interest.
    Detachables saw triple digit year-over-year growth, although it was on a low base as uptake in this form factor began mainly from Q2 2016. Interestingly, Micromax leads in the detachables category accounting for more than one-third of total shipments in Q1 2016.
