Apple Macbook Pro 2016 finds the exit of the HDMI port, MagSafe 2, USB ports, Thunderbolt 2 and SD card slot
The new Apple MacBook Pro notebooks are out, and start at $1,499. Unlike the last generation of the MacBook Pro, the 2016 one has all new ports. The new series of the MacBook Pro sees the exit of the MagSafe 2 power adapter, HDMI port, SDXC card slot and Thunderbolt 2 ports. Instead, the new generation MacBook Pro now comes with four Thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports and one 3.5mm headphone jack.
What this means for the consumers who have been invested in the Apple ecosystem is they will have to buy a whole range of new accessories compatible with the new MacBook Pro generation. And obviously, these accessories are going to cost you a lot.
If you have been a MacBook Pro or a MacBook Air user in the past, you probably have a few MagSafe 2 power adapters lying around and let’s face it, they are extremely fragile. If you plan to purchase the new MacBook Pro series, these adapters will be completely useless for you. The new laptops charge using Thunderbolt 3 USB-C port.
With MacBook Pro’s all new ports, people will find the need to invest in a few adapters. Buying the new MacBook Pro you might find the need to spend on Apple’s new USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter giving connectivity to three ports – HDMI port, USB 3.0, and USB type-C. This adapter will however set you back by $69 (approx Rs 4,600).
If your need is for a simple USB port, users can opt for Apple’s USB-C to USB adapter which is priced at $19 (approx Rs 1,200). However, if you have the need for more than one USB port, you will have to invest in third-party adapters providing multiple inputs.
To charge your iPhone on your new MacBook Pro, users will also need to invest in a USB-C to lightning cable (length 1m) that is available at $25 (approx Rs 1,600). A USB-C to Ethernet Adapter cable will set you back another $35 (approx Rs 2,300).

Most people using the MacBook Air (including myself) have been forced to buy a Thunderbolt 2 to HDMI port accessory to find the ability to connect them to a monitor or TV. With the Thunderbolt 2 gone, you either throw away the adapters or buy Apple’s Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter, but you should realise that you will be connecting an adapter to an adapter (priced $49).
For someone who plans to use their new MacBook Pro extensively, you will see yourself spending a good $100 to $150 more for accessories, if you want to make this work with older devices, even your iPhone.
