• Fitbit forecasts dismal holiday quarter, shares sink

    Fitbit, which launched two new fitness wristbands, Charge 2 and Flex 2, in late August, said it sold 5.3 million devices in the quarter.
    Wearable fitness device maker Fitbit Inc’s revenue forecast for the key-holiday shopping quarter fell well below of analysts’ estimates, hurt by soft demand and production issues related to its new Flex 2 wristband. Shares of the company, which also reported lower-than-expected quarterly revenue, plummeted more than 30 per cent in extended trading on Wednesday and were set to hit record-low levels on Thursday. Fitbit forecast revenue of $725 million to $750 million for the October-December quarter. That was well below analysts’ average estimate of $985.1 million.

    Fitbit, which recently introduced its Charge 2 and Flex 2 fitness bands, captured 25.4 per cent of the market with sales growth of nearly 29 per cent.
    Fitbit extended its lead in the market for connected wearables in the second quarter amid a sharp drop in Apple Watch sales, a survey showed. The survey by research firm IDC said the global wearables market grew 26.1 per cent from a year ago to 22.5 million units.
    Fitbit, which recently introduced its Charge 2 and Flex 2 fitness bands, captured 25.4 per cent of the market with sales growth of nearly 29 per cent, IDC said. Chinese electronics group Xiaomi was second with a market share of 14 per cent, with modest sales growth of 2.5 per cent, according to the survey.

  • Fitbit market leader in basic bands, Apple Watch set to grow: Canalys

    Fitbit continues to dominate the basic band sector in Q2 2016 with over 3.7 million shipments, while smartwatches saw a sluggish growth, shows data from research firm Canalys. Xiaomi was in second place, according to Canalys and its Mi band shipments stood at nearly 3 million, with Garmin coming in at number three (over 700,000 shipments).
    Fitbit has seen a growth of over 36 per cent year-on-year, says the research firm. “Fitbit’s remarkable growth story has continued. It has managed to do this primarily by driving its main competitors out of business. Jawbone’s shipments, for example, will soon come to an end,” ,” said Canalys Analyst Jason Low. But he pointed out there is pressure in Fibit from smartwatches, especially if cheaper ones with better battery life become more common.

    Fitbit continues to remain as the leader in the wearables market, with Apple coming in at number two, shows the latest data from research firm International Data Corporation (IDC).
    IDC’s numbers revealed that the wearables market grew by 126.9 per cent in Q4, and an overall 171.6 per cent in 2015. IDC says vendors shipped a total of 27.4 million units during the holiday quarter, while a total of 78.1 million units were shipped for 2015.
